#1 – Only work on the way down
The hardest part of a pull-up is pulling yourself up. So skip that part. Just use a box/bench/chair to step up instead, and start with your chin above the bar. Step off the box, and hold the pull-up position as long as you can. Then lower yourself down as slowly as you can. Both the static hold and the controlled negative movement will build your strength.
#2 – Jumping pull-ups
This is one of the more common Max Workouts Exercises. Stand on a raised platform so that your arms are slightly bent when you hold the bar. Make sure the platform is stable – a chair won’t work. Lower yourself down until your arms are straight, and then jump up while pulling up at the same time. When you land, immediately jump up again (your legs act like springs when you do these quickly). This one is easier to do if you use a pull-up bar that has two handles you can hold onto and raise your head between.
#3 – Pull downs
All gyms have a pull-down machine you can use. Just set the weight, sit down, reach over your head, grab the bar, and pull it down. This exercise is okay, but I prefer the following alternative:
Get an exercise band (a super-strong elastic tube or strap specifically made for working out). Loop it over the pull-up bar. Stand a few feet back from the bar, with one foot forward, the other back. Bend forward at the hips so that your upper body is pointing at the bar. Grasp each end of the band, and pull until your hands reach either side of your shoulders. You can adjust the difficulty by adjusting your distance from the bar, and by using different bands.
#4 – Foot-assisted
This is really simple, and it works well. Place a chair or bench in front of you while you’re beneath the pull-up bar. Place one foot on the chair, and use your leg strength to assist in the pull-up. You can make this more difficult either by using your leg less, or moving the chair further away from you so that your leg can’t push up as easily.
#5 – Band-assisted
Here’s another one that uses an exercise band. Just loop it over the bar, and step one foot into the handles, and push them down to the floor. Then do pull-ups normally. The band will give you a boost.
Be careful not to let the band slip off your foot. It can also be tricky getting a band of the right length. You can actually find some that are purpose-made for this exercise. I have one which uses fabric straps for the bar and foot-loop, and inserts the band in between these.
#6 – Pull overs
Technically this isn’t a pull-up at all. But it engages the same muscles, so it will help build your strength up, and is a reasonable pull-up substitute.
Facing upwards, place your shoulders on a bench and bend your knees ninety degrees with your feet flat on the ground. Everything between your shoulders and knees should make a straight line, parallel to the floor. (Viewed from above, the bench and your body should make the letter “T”, where the bench is the top of the “T”.) Hold a single dumbbell with both hands above your head, arms extended. Slowly lower the dumbbell behind your head and towards the floor, keeping your arms extended and your body straight, then bring it back up again.
#7 – Rows
Another non-pull-up that will help develop some of the muscles needed for pull-ups. Stand one foot forward, the other back, and bend forward at the hips, keeping your back straight. Grab a pair of heavy dumbbells and pull them up until your hands are beside your rib cage. Make sure you use both your back and arm muscles.
#8 – Inverted Rows
This final non-pull-up is a great exercise, and another one that’s used a lot in Max Workouts. Find a horizontal bar that’s about hip-high, lie under it and grab it. You can use a bar-bell and rack, or playground equipment. You can even use a thick mop handle and a couple of sturdy stools if you like (be very careful to make sure this is stable). My favorite is to just lie under a solidly built table and grab the table edge. You can either keep your body straight, resting on your heels. Or you can bend your knees and rest on flat feet, while keeping the rest of your body straight. Now just pull yourself up, bringing your chest towards the bar.
